Netball in a coma

It is now history that Barbados has finally won a game at the Netball World Cup 2015..albeit against the weakest country in the competition. What the many supporters of the Barbados Gems may not know is that the Gems were the coaches of themselves in this and games prior to this maiden victory.

With this in mind and knowing that the coaches  failed to do their job on any level, is it fair to those with the sport at heart that these individuals be allowed to remain?

Between the years 2009 - 2011, it was a given that a coaching programme with the improvement of the national team as the main focus be presented to the Barbados Netball Association. Such programme was implemented and the advancement of netball started.

In 2012m  I had thrown my hat in the ring for the post of Vice President of the Barbados Netball Association. On the night of the elections, the old vanguards who believed that  netball was theirs
came to "make sure that Cameron didn't win". On that said night, the present national coach openly shouted "WE TEKKING BACK WE SPORT!"

The 'taking back of the sport' has now caused the country major embarrassment in more ways than one causing the same old vanguards to be shocked into silence.

With regional sports commentators, journalists and other personalities asking the same question, are we going to allow the pretenders to remain in charge in any capacity or are we willing to speak as a concerned nation and ask for ALL resignations?

It is also public knowledge based on reports and carried in the media, that the emphasis was on beating Trinidad, which means that no consideration was given into competing against Australia or New Zealand. A realistic approach to the Calypso Girls was also not implemented realising that we were defeated by the same team at the AFNA qualifiers last year.

It was also public knowledge that finishing in a higher position than 2011 would've further cemented the thinking that the coach of the Barbados team then was not in the same bracket.Fortunately.....that is true...HE'S BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!

The sport was taken back and it is now in a comatose state. Who will be saddled with the responsibility to resuscitate it?

If we allow the present crop to do so...IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL will be the anthem of this sport.

0 - 5....Sunglasses of embarrassment

"We tekking back we sport!"
With those five words, the sport of netball was given back to the individual who would ultimately lead us into the 2015 Netball World Cup.

With those five words, the Barbados Gems have been the brunt of public scrutiny, harsh comments and shocking defeats.

With those five words, the ranking of Barbados seems heading for a downward spiral.

After shocking the netball world with the insane prediction that the Gems would defeat the top two countries in the world, the Gems have lost three straight games through POOR coaching decisions with two of the defeats coming to teams ranked lower than Barbados.

For some stupid reason, the target coming into NWC was to defeat Trinidad and Tobago. We lost that one 39-55. Trinidad is ranked 10th.

We were expected to win against Scotland. We lost 34-37. Scotland is ranked 11th.

I do not know what the thinking was going into the game against Fiji but it I'm sure that the emphasis would've been on winning. We lost that one too 37-48. Fiji is ranked higher at 7th.

Now we play the lowest of the low in all the teams - Sri Lanka and with what has been happening in Sydney...don't be surprised if ..... Sri Lanka is ranked 22nd.

I applaud the twelve girls who are in Sydney...I do not applaud or support the asinine decisions that have made them the laughing stock of anyone who knows the game.

That being said, when the Barbados Netball Association made it clear that there's a no tolerance policy to anything which might bring the game into disrepute, I am sure it extended to this present management.

You have weighed in the balance and found wanted.   Leave the girls to coach themselves and take a trip to GAIA.

Barbados Gems...who are they?

What is a Gem? A Gem is a precious or semi-precious stone especially when it is cut or polished or engraved with a monetary value in mind.

Who are the Barbados Gems? A group of highly talented and skillful individuals given the task of representing Barbados.

The recent spate of negative convos, articles and even blog posts have always been about the coaching or lack of coaching for these Gems. While it is true that some responsibility has to be taken by them, it is would also be wrong not to try to see things from their side.

I might never know the inner and true feelings on how they function as individuals off court or why they didn't show more honesty when given the forum to do so but I will try to understand how they are functioning in the present situation.

I believe that with little coaching the twelve individuals given the responsibility as ambassadors are hoping to fight against whatever odds ( SIDELINE) and play to their best. I also believe that in hoping to shine as they should will require more polishing from those who 'owns' them.

I will say this and make no bones about it. While I support the Barbados Gems, I cannot support the offcourt 'ownership' knowing that better can be done.

So who are the 2015 Barbados Gems?

Kizzy Marville
Sabreena Smith
Nikita Piggott
Rheann Niles
Latonia Blackman
Faye Sealy
Shonica Wharton
Shanice Rock
Cherise Seale
Shonette Bruce
Samantha Browne
Sheniqua Thomas

The fight is real!

Bombed!

"It is with much regret that we announce that the epic blockbuster remake  NETBALL2015 has bombed globally and is will be heading straight to DVD."

This announcement came earlier today via a text message from the office of the major stakeholder of the film , the Barbados Netball Association  - after the Barbados Gems lost the highly anticipated battle at the box office to the Trinidad and Tobago Calypso Girls.

With the original feature COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2006 as a reminder, it was hoped that Sydney 2015 would've fared better despite the rehiring of the leading actress from 2006,

It wasn't to be!

The writing should've been on the wall after a private showing which left the stakeholders dumbfounded that after what was perceived to be a hit and the injection of thousands...NETBALL2015 was a certain flop.

Without wanting to offend the leading lady for fear of not finding a suitable replacement the BNA remained quiet allowing the crew to be ridiculed and threatened to be fired.

The outcome of all this suffering and public embarrassment was played on the big screen to an audience hoping for a hit for the sake of country. Instead they saw the result of a feature film devoid of any structure.

Now who takes the blame for this dud? Who will be fired, axed,or held accountable for the shame brought to country?

It was a different script from Melbourne 2006 BUT the leading lady was the same AND the results were the same.

I have a dream...

What is a coach? What makes a good coach? Are their characteristics to being a coach or even a good coach?
A coach is generally seen as a teacher, a mentor, a role  model, a confidant and may even be seen as a friend PLUS a coach REMEMBERS!!!!!

A coach should remember saying that:

“We are ready to create the biggest upset ever by defeating both the number one and the number two seeds. It will be very, very difficult, but it is not impossible," ( http://www.sportsmax.tv)
Was the above quote an attempt at Comedy101 or the thinking of a human being saddled with the responsibility of preparing a team for the biggest competition of that sport?
Sure Barbados was drawn in a zone with three top ten countries but as any good coach knows...the focus should be on setting realistic goals ( pun intended) and not letting the world know that in our country....we don't only speak dialect..we also speak LAVATORY MATTER!
There was an 'intensive six days a week' training programme put in place where from all indications worked 'wonders' as evidenced by the LOW scores and POOR level of netball shown in the LOCAL  domestic competition ( division 1). There were gym sessions, spin sessions and even a few beep tests thrown in for good measure.
What never happened was effective and efficient coaching!!!!!!!
On to Sydney and World #2 ( New Zealand Silver Ferns)and we lost  28-73....chalk it down to jetlag as the team had arrived in Australia exactly one day before the tournament started.
Day two and it's the World #1 ( Australia Diamonds) and again we lost 16-83. ONLY 16??????
So the upset minded coach who said to the netballing world that the Barbados Gems could've done the impossible....reminded the netballing world that sometimes to speak is to reveal a high level of DUMBfoolery!
Such foolery defies the  logic of  the starting seven in the Australia Diamonds game....
Nikita Piggott ( GS) Sheniqua Thomas ( GA) Cherise Seale(WA)Latonia Blackman(C)KizzyMarville(WD)Rheann Niles(GD)Shonette Bruce(GK)
REALLY????
As it stands, the Gems are 0-2 from pool play with Trinidad and Tobago next. 0-3 is a high possibility.

I was told via facebook that there should be a firing of the coach via a text message. I was told via a whatsapp message that the President of the Barbados Netball Association should also be fired.Hmmm!
Is there even a slight possibility that either of the two will happen or at the very least ONE?

To whom much is given...much is expected!

No gear !

The Barbados Netball Association has allegedly done it again to the Bajan Gems!

On the eve of the team's departure to  World Cup Sydney 2015, the Gems have been rattled with the news that they have to buy their own gear bags and  dresses ( candle lighting ceremony) because of a lack of money. What makes matters worst is that the girls were told in order to secure any bags and dresses, they had to raise at least $2500.00.

With this in mind and knowing the importance of team and uniformity, the players set out to raise this money falling short by $200.00.

Now they have been told that this money has allegedly ( that word again) been given to the Barbados Olympic Association and that those members who were on the 2014 Commonwealth Games team will be expected to use the backpack from those games.

Rumour is also  rife that the newbies to the team have been given the same bags from the Comm Games ( BEGGED FOR) and  those who are remaining from that team ( 2014) are obligated to use their old ones.

Does this decision mean that the BNA couldn't or didn't think that the players were worthy of being seen as Ambassadors to the island? Doesn't a team ranked in the top 10 ( ninth) deserve the right to look the part?

DOESN'T GILBERT MAKE BAGS,PULLEYS,etc?????

Doesn't the Board of the Barbados Netball Association have any backbone and are they so out of tune with reality that they would make and or agree with  this LAVATORY MATTER???

This asinine decision is a slap in the face to a team that has struggled from the beginning on all levels starting with the lack of a quality ( if any) coaching programme.

To whom much is given..much is expected!!!

To whom nothing is given...nothing is expected!!!!

MAC v AVON

So we had a game tonight at the Netball Stadium where the Station Hill Cavaliers was set to throw down a challenge to the Barbados Gems at a scheduled starting time of 8pm.

8.30 pm and no umpires would consent to umpire this game leaving two juniors the sad task of being ridiculed and demoralised...ONE former national especially. To make matters worst, the Gems were being manhandled by the basketballers leaving the spectators to wonder if this was the team Sydney 2015 bound.

Sadly for the paying spectators and thankfully for the Gems...the rains came and cancelled the embarrassment that was about to happen.

However as with anything netball this season..Hurricane Medusa and the Scarlet Pimpernel swooped down at Waterford wreaking havoc AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!

As one avid supporter of netball recently said...."there isn't enough makeup in the world to hide the ugliness of Medusa". Additionally...there isn't enough to cover the brutish behaviour of the Pimpernel.

ALL facts!

The 2015 Pine Hill Dairy sponsored National Sports Council Primary Schools' netball competition has finally ended and again the blatant and obvious bias  against Blackman and Gollop or their coach reared it's UGLY face again.
It is unimaginable to think that a school can win so many awards in any competition at any level any where in the world and only be given TWO individual awards. Please see the following:

Team A
The Aileen Jeffers Memorial Tournament,
The Caronlyn Sinckler Zone 10,
The Zone 10 Team Shooting Competition
The Overall Team Shooting Competition
The Overall Championship
Record Setting Score of 38 goals in a match
Conceded less than 10 goals in the entire season
Team B
2nd in the Aileen Jeffers Memorial Tournament
The Pamala Proverbs Zone 5
The Zone 5 Team Shooting Competition
2nd In the Overall Championship
3rd Highest Score of 30 goals in a match
Conceded less than 15 goals in the entire season

The fact that the B&G teams were arguably the best in this year's competition was as a result of a dedicated and forward thinking individual who in my opinion didn't set out to highlight the POOR COACHING of the NSC coaches but to give fifteen young ladies the chance to showcase their skills at the primary level.
The fact that Hurricane Medusa and the nasty trail targeted towards Staple Grove was one even the Met Office can't explain.
The fact that the whistle blowers couldn't hide their obvious dislike for blowing their whistles when Teams B&G were playing was as obvious as their lack of coaching abilities.
The fact that commonsense isn't all that common readily applies to some people in Bleinheim.
AND finally...The fact that no one seems to know when Hurricane Medusa will slow it's GARGOYLE like UGLY demolition of netball means that Barbados as a regional netball force might be coming to an end!!!

Buckle up people...it's gonna get real UGLY!!

Really??

Why is it that with so many issues permeating the netball landscape that the head honcho of the local Federation can still find the time to make people's lives uncomfortable?

Imagine that the national issue of the Blackman and Gollop Primary School saga is still going on and as yet the head honcho hasn't said a word but yet can find the time to make someone uncomfortable?

Imagine that the national programme of the senior national team is in a state of disarray and nothing is being done about it?

Why is it that Makeba Clarke is being targeted by the VP of the BNA and now apparently his superior??

What has Makeba done that is so wrong other than be the next best umpire from Barbados?

When this young LADY sneezes too hard..a complaint! When she sings...a complaint! When she umpires the BEST so far...a NATIONAL complaint!

The mere fact that members of the Board can be satisfied with what can be seen as BULLYING of this young LADY and making attempts to provoke her is nothing less than a travesty!

Makeba has never been disrespectful, deceitful, undermining or so many more negative things but yet whenever she is around, whether as a player or an umpire...some people find their girdles in knots!

LEAVE MAKEBA ALONE!

When FIVE became ONE !!!!!!!

I am in awe of how with so many national players in their midst ( five to be precise on both teams)both THE CHURCH YARD team  and THE BLACKBIRDS WHO DON'T FLY at night are playing some of the most asinine netball in the 2015 Barbados Netball Association Division 1.

Imagine scoring 26 goals in a losing effort to the TEAM FROM SMS ( PHSB)  and  then scoring 32/33 ( UWIBB) to a team with ONE present national. The common thread here is TOO MUCH national practice!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those who have no idea..there is a common thread in both teams and what makes matters worst..there's a bigger one pulling strings behind the scene who sits in the DANGEROUS BOX nightly criticizing any umpire who dares to make a call against these two teams.

For those who care...coaching isn't about name calling or wondering why a national player ( GD) would allow another national player ( WA,GA) to out play her.

Here's the answer. Book sense isn't and can never be commonsense and some people have NONE!!

On to Kingston and the cake soap!!

Villaaaaaaaa did it!

When much is given much is expected and tonight Pride of Villa gave Pine Hill St Barnabas so much that at the end of the game, one member of St Barnabas in turn literally cursed a member of the League Committee who is also an umpire.

Who disciplines this player and how?

How many weeks, months or years before a decision is made?

The fact of the matter is simple!St Barnabas played as poor as Team Barbados versus Team Jamalco( a Jamaican club team).

With five members of the soon to be released national team and leading 17-3 at the end of the first quarter only to win 37-30???  Hmmmmm!

Anyways...the frustration of not being able to get over a hump and the sad state of their netball might've led this highly touted GOAL KEEPER to go anal on poor Karuche Pebbles.

The BNA has been informed and the wait is on!

Lashes!

What happens when a representative team is chosen to represent Barbados in netball and in said team are players who aren't remotely competitive?

What happens when the governing body of local netball allows such a team to be representatives of an entire island?

What happens when one member of the representative team was so poor in a recent game that she seemed confused as to what to do?

Why was it that a player from the insurance team was invited to national trials only to be given the boot in favour of the above player?

Another way the sport of netball has been TAKEN BACK!

Get out the bandages, smelling salts, Andrews,etc...it's gonna be a lotta lashes coming out of Kingston,

Something aint right!

Whoever said that youth is always better than experience LIED!!!

When a 52 year-old woman who would've just played a game less than one hour before could torment,out-think and out-play two starting national defenders...then we know that something is WRONG!!!!!!!!

When a former national player who hasn't played top flight netball for a few years can torment,out-think and out-play the starting national goal shooter...then we know that something is WRONG!!!!

When a player who has never made any national team at any level can wreak so much havoc and force the coach of the opposing team to make several changes...then we know that something is WRONG!!!!!

When the UWI Blackbirds which is riddled with many national trialists and had FIVE on court plus one from another Caribbean territory and can only beat Spooners Hill by a solitary goal..then we know that something is WRONG!!!!

Good job Deborah Kellman,Lisa Puckerin and Shannya Wiggins!!!!

Good job Team Spooners Hill!!!

Taming of the shrew!

Google defines a shrew as a bad-tempered or aggressive woman or a small mouselike insectivorous mammal with a long pointed mouth and tiny eyes.

When the Weekend Nation ( Friday May 29) broke the story that the Minister of Sport had issued a directive that Blackman and Gollop Primary School  hadn't broken any competition rules in netball and were to be allowed to play in the NSC's competition...did he kill the mouse or slap the former?

What's left to see now is if there will be ENOUGH OFFICIALS at the playing venues to officiate the games when B&G  ( A or B) are scheduled to play.

Remember, the directive is about playing...officiating is another matter!

In any case, the shrew was tamed!

WHAPAXXXXXXX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or as Madd  is singing, which ironically was said to a good friend of mine outside the Netball Stadium many years ago by a netball coach at the NSC...." You can't be ugly and foolish at the same time....."

Mind boggling or lavatory matter?

I don't know what kind of intensity is being given at national practice but if the poor standard of netball being displayed by national trialists nightly in the senior division is any indication...we're in for a long and painful season.

I don't know why we're gonna ask for thousands to take a team to Sydney when the main focus is what's gonna happen off the netball court.

I don't know..I don't know...sheesh..only SHE knows!!!!!!!!!!!!

With almost every game finishing in the low 30s and the many injuries from these players, the Barbados Netball Association should be worried by now.

Let's not forget the asisine comments being made by Hurricane Medusa who seems to think that no one is to offer an opinion on what is probably the saddest state of netball at the senior level for a long time.

Without blaming the players ( even though they can take some blame), something has to happen ...AND FAST!!!!!

On another note, when the coach of any team can dictate who they prefer NOT to umpire any game and the wish is granted WITHOUT the opposing team's approval...something is wrong!

It speaks to another case where the ' ALMOST EXPELLED FROM BCC' can manipulate the limited integrity of those in charge.

Lavatory matter !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hurricane Medusa strikes!

Barbadians braced themselves yesterday for the first hurricane of the season but it was Salisbury,St George which was mostly affected.

Unleashing a nasty gargoyle like approach on the area Hurricane Medusas left one school catspraddled, confused and utterly befuddled that of ALL the schools in the area, they were the only one affected by the smelly, disgusting stench left in it's wake.

When the furor had ended, parents, teachers and the MALE coach of the Blackman and Gollop School were left with the responsibility of explaining to the lasses affected why the eye of Hurricane Medusa seemed to befocused towards them.

The Met Office understands that further chaos from this devilish hurricane is expected to hit the Netball Stadium in Waterford, possibly Kingston Jamaica and also Australia.

Gonna be an ugly set of debris after!

Not Spooners Hill!!!!!

" Spooners Hill is no club for anybody to play".

With those words the gargoyle spoke and minnows buckled. For approximately three months one of the most promising netballers was being coached by Alwyn Babb and taught the fundamentals of goal shooting by myself.

 In one loud roar....that changed!!

"If u wanna make a national team, u can't play for Spooners Hill".
The gargoyle roared again and the player heeded to the loudness.

Now the battle lines have been drawn and something will happen.

Anybody in local netball knows that the Spooners Hill Netball Club doesn't backdown when the truth has to be told and this is no exception.

That being said...if a shepherd can't lead a flock to greener pastures but can only find what is arid and musty, then that shepherd is nothing more than irrelevant.

Whoa betide them!

In what can be considered the first in local netball, a sitting BIG-UP of the governing body has allegedly found it possible to halt or hinder the personal development of an up and coming umpire.

Is this gonna be the norm for umpires or will the Board of the Barbados Netball Association and the Executive of the Barbados Association of Netball Umpires launch an investigation into what has caused this 'pulling of rank'?

Power in the hands of an idiot is a ticking time bomb!  At the moment the selfish actions have prevented this budding umpire from traveling to the regional under 16 competition and it seems unlikely that she will umpire in the 2015 domestic competition. Is this the term of terror by this newly elected board? Is this the way the business of netball will be conducted in Barbados? Well if it is a war against those who have a mind of their own and would call a spade a spade, then I am sending a clear warning. Prepare for a battle and the building in Whitepark Road!

For those who would like to know what has caused this entire fracas..it is nothing more than a FACEBOOK page.

For those wanting to know the name of the page - NETBALL BARBADOS which is different to Netball - Barbados and the World.

This is one of two informative netball pages created by  Barbadians and for a sitting Board member of the Barbados Netball Association and their  superior to use this as a means to nullify the growth of this budding umpire.....PURE VICTIMIZATION!!!!

Make A Kindred Effort Baller Assistant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More questions than answers!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the 2015 Netball World Cup less than seven months away, it is sad, disturbing, shocking and puzzling that we have found ourselves allegedly  cancelling national practice on the premise that there is no team.

We saw this coming and knew it was going to happen yet nothing was done to prevent the bleed.

We have now  sat back and focused on beating the Calypso Girls from Trinidad and Tobago, the Silver Ferns from New Zealand and the Diamonds from Australia similar to how we questioned last year's Commonwealth Games draw and won a solitary game against St Lucia. Thank you St Lucia...you saved our 'faces'!

We have some how forgotten that in order to beat the lowest of the low, the treatment meted out to those chosen to represent us must be seen as fair and unbiased making it easier to relate  to both on and off court.

We must always remember that when a player of a high caliber decides that because of unfair treatment she will no longer be interested in representing her country because of alleged verbal abuse, that speaks volumes. When three or more have the same mindset...that speaks a sacking!

The comfort of a team  is and should be of utmost importance to everyone SELECTED to guide that team into any competition. The fallout therefore from  that team whether it is by  player, coach, assistant coach or manager should be seen as a priority and an investigation carried out.

Less we forget that five players can start a netball game. Shouldn't the Famous Five who comprise the  training squad  be given the trek to Australia if for nothing more than perseverance?

Now we ask ourselves this question. Why is there more questions than answers?
