AFNA Day 1

The 2010 AFNA World Netball qualifiers started on a high for Team Barbados on Friday ( July 23) with a tantalizing victory against St.Vincent and the Grenadines.

Playing in a furnace that is the Beausejour Indoor facility, the Alwyn Babb coached team got off to a slow start. The line up for Team Barbados was Lydia Bishop ( GS) ,Nikita Piggott ( GA) , Sabrina Browne( WA) , Sabreena Smith ( C), Kizzy Marville ( WD), Latonia Blackman ( GD) and Lisa Puckerin ( GK) .

In the first quarter of a very pedestrian game, shooter Lydia Bishop seemed frustrated and it showed in her body language. As a result of this SVG ended the first quarter 11-10.

At the resumption of the game,Team Barbados finally turned up! Lydia seemingly began to play the level of netball that she is known for and the entire Barbadian team began to show themselves as title contenders before going into the halftime with a lead of 24-21.

Needing fresh legs in the third and always crucial quarter,Babb introduced the younger of the Browne sisters ( Samantha) at (C) and moved Sabreena Smith to (WA) which immediately paid dividends. The defensive minded spark was like the turf the game was being played on ( all over the place).

This combination coupled with an almost perfect switching combination between the two shooters allowed Barbados to more than triple the goals of SVG in this quarter ( 16-5) and a third quarter score of 40-25.

With the game all but over, Team Barbados went on a rampage racking up a whopping seventeen goals in the last quarter ( 17-8) before closing out the game 57-33.

Lydia Bishop - 31/39
Nikita Piggott - 26/31

SVG - J Frank - 14/18
Gailene Gordon - 19/24
In other games Trinidad and Tobago beat a determined Canada 48-36 and the USA stunned St.Lucia 42-38.
